How VAR Works
Your VAR measures decision quality, not results. You can play perfectly and lose money, or play terribly and get lucky. VAR captures only what you can control.
What does VAR measure?
Every decision you make at the table has mathematically optimal play. VAR tracks how closely your decisions match optimal play across two dimensions:
A concrete example
You're dealt 16 vs dealer 10. You Stand. The dealer busts — you win $100.
Great result, right? But mathematically, Hitting was the better decision. Your VAR goes down even though you won, because you captured less expected value than was available.
This is the core insight: outcomes are random, but decisions are measurable.
Tiers
Your VAR places you in a tier. New players start at 210 (Rookie). As you play more hands, your VAR converges toward your true skill level.
VAR vs P/L
The leaderboard shows both VAR and Profit/Loss side by side. You'll notice they don't always correlate. A skilled player can have a negative P/L due to bad luck, while an unskilled player might be up due to good luck. Over time, the highest-VAR players tend to be profitable — but in the short run, anything can happen.
VAR is the only metric that determines your rank. P/L is shown for context but never affects your position.
Provisional period
Until you've played 400 hands, your VAR is provisional. Provisional players appear greyed out on the leaderboard and don't hold rank positions. This prevents hot streaks on tiny samples from dominating the board.
